M-DCPS TO CREATE EDUCATION COUNCIL MIAMI – With the American business environment becoming increasingly global and ever more competitive, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is taking important steps to provide students an education that will prepare them to face the challenges of the new global economy through the Education Council of International Cities (ECIC). The impetus for the creation of this council is the pressing need for Miami-Dade, as well as the rest of the United States, to adapt and thrive in an age when distance and time are increasingly less important as barriers to global commerce. In order for students to remain competitive in today’s world, the District is adopting a global perspective on education. M-DCPS will begin to develop a formalized ECIC to identify international benchmarks for quality education from both an academic and economic perspective. The council will be made up of chief education officers, national and international business researchers, business leaders and mayors of major urban cities from around the world. They will work together to develop international achievement standards, best practices in professional development for teachers and educational innovations. While international research teams are common in science and other industries, they are rare in education, particularly as initiated by an urban school district. The ultimate goal of this cutting-edge council is to develop a curriculum modeled on world-class standards that will be taught by high-quality teachers. The result would be student achievement at its most superior levels. Membership of the ECIC will be established by May 2007. ### 06-FMN/032/TEL |
