M-DCPS TO HELP BOOST LOCAL WORKFORCE
THROUGH CONSTRUCTION PILOT PROGRAM

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools will embark on an innovative construction pilot program that provides career opportunities in a variety of entry level, skilled trade and professional services positions to local residents. Career opportunities are anticipated in various fields from air conditioning and refrigeration to fire protection systems.

The pilot program will provide the following:

  • Community-based workforce and skills development programs that promote job opportunities for local residents
  • A viable program for long-term employment in connection with the schools capital building plan
  • Help for residents to cultivate solid work skills for better jobs and benefits in the future
  • Community outreach to utilize local resources to help build new schools
  • A venue to build and foster relationships between M-DCPS and local communities
  • An adequate and skilled workforce to meet construction industry needs by investing in the county’s workforce
  • Mentoring relationships with individuals and emerging businesses

Four major projects have been selected for this pilot program. They include the Miami Carol City Senior High School, Young Men’s Preparatory Academy, Miami CentralSenior High School and Miami Douglas MacArthur South construction projects.

Program management services and facilities staff will work with the community in cooperation with Adult and Career Education and other District staff to establish relationships with the District’s construction firms. The program is budgeted to not exceed $500,000.
