MIAMI-DADE PROCLAMATION HONORS MIAMI - The Miami-Dade County Mayor and Commissioners recently designated November 3, 2006 as a day to honor the teachers and tens of millions of adult learners who have participated in the nation's adult education and literacy programs. Dedicated instructors have helped to empower undereducated Americans since George Washington's efforts on behalf of illiterate soldiers at Valley Forge. With the passage of the Adult Education Act in 1966, a new education system was formed. Today, Miami-Dade County Public Schools operates the largest network of adult education programs in Florida and one of the largest in the country. On any given day in Miami-Dade County, teachers and volunteers are working to teach English and raise public literacy skills for adults in hundreds of classrooms, libraries, night schools, and community centers. Improved literacy skills are important for both work and civic participation, and the impact of parental literacy on children is one of the key rationales behind the recently established Parent Academy of Miami-Dade County Public Schools. ### 06-FMN/057/jjs |
