TWO NEW K-8 CENTERS MOVE FORWARD

MIAMI – Two new K-8 Centers, one to the east and one to the west, will soon be in the works as part of Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Five-Year Capital Plan. The School Board approved the planned facilities at its Wednesday meeting.

The District will acquire 2.1 acres to build a K-8 Center in Sunny Isles at N.E. 182nd Drive and Atlantic Boulevard for a 1,624-seat school that will relieve Ruth K. Broad/Bay Harbor Elementary and Highland Oaks Middle schools.

The school will be located adjacent to a planned public park. The City of Sunny Isles officials have allocated $10 million toward park improvements, which include an outdoor Little League baseball field, a gymnasium, indoor basketball, volleyball and badminton courts and a two-story Community/Recreational Center. The park will be used for the school’s daily recreational activities.

The School Board also approved converting Miami Lakes Elementary School into a K-8 Center. The 1,550-seat school will introduce sixth grade as soon as possible and add seventh and eighth grades in subsequent years. The conversion will allow the school to continue providing an emphasis on foreign language, technology and the arts. Students with disabilities will continue to participate in a full inclusion program and the schools’ oral program of instruction to deaf and hearing-impaired children.
