MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, COUNTY FORGE COMPACT MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Miami-Dade County agreed to work together and marshal their collective resources in joint ventures to raise the level of education delivered and to save taxpayer dollars. The School Board and the Board of County Commissioners’ Intergovernmental, Recreation and Cultural Arts Committee on Wednesday each adopted resolutions forging an education compact between Miami-Dade’s two largest governmental entities and employers. County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez sponsored the commission’s resolution, which was co-sponsored by all members of the committeee present for the vote. The unprecedented compact is modeled after a similar partnership between the school system and the City of Miami approved in September. The District and the County will pursue collaboration in three broad areas of shared interest: economies of scale, training and professional development, and education and facilities. In terms of economies of scale, the two governments may work together in areas such as procurement, fuel buying, health insurance, emergency management, public health, and telecommunications, including the 311 information line and wireless Internet access, among others. Collaborations for training and professional development may include areas in which both the District and the County have workers -- transportation, landscaping, maintenance training, and law enforcement, for example. Joint planning regarding the District’s transformation of its high schools and middle schools as well as joint use of parking and recreation facilities, parks, libraries, and future land use all will be reviewed as facilities issues. # # # 06-LJG/174/JA |
