ART TEACHERS GATHER TO LEARN FROM MIAMI-DADE SCHOOLS MIAMI – Art instructors and administrators from across the country and as far away as Africa will gather in Miami to learn what’s behind one of Florida’s most successful arts-based service-learning projects as part of 4th Annual Service-Learning and the Arts Conference, March 30-April 1. While attending the conference, educators will observe Pupils’ Perceptions, a program where at-risk students from Miami Douglas MacArthur South Senior High School learn from community artists, then give back to the community. MacArthur students travel to ArtSouth, an artist community in Homestead, Florida, for art classes. They develop their talents, then create, teach and share their skills with the elderly, disabled, other students and the community-at-large. The 3-day conference is hosted by Florida Learn & Serve, Miami-Dade County Public Schools and California College of the Arts: Center for Art and Public Life. The conference schedule includes: Thursday, March 30th: Dinner reception, Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, 7 p.m. Friday, March 31st: Conference sessions, Colonnade Hotel, 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 1st: ArtSouth, closing session, 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. # # # 06-LJG/180/TEL |
