M-DCPS OFFERS DIVERSE SUMMER SCHOOL OPTIONS THROUGH MIAMI – Miami-Dade students will have the opportunity to catch up and in some cases get ahead when they participate in the District’s summer school program this year. Summer school opens June 21 and runs through July 20 for some 60,000 eligible students from Miami-Dade’s public schools. Intended primarily for students needing extra help, the so-called “Passport to Summer Expeditions” program will be offered at dozens of schools. Summer school is mandatory for all retained third-graders at select elementary schools and third-graders who scored low on the Stanford Achievement Test. The following also are eligible:
The program extends the District’s literacy and secondary reform initiatives. Distinct themes organize teaching and learning at each instructional level. Themes include Excursions into Nature through Literature for elementary, Honoring our Heritage: Discovering Ourselves through the Past for middle and Success through Lifelong Learning for high school. New to the “Summer Expeditions” program this year will be six “demonstration” schools, to feature research-based classroom practices that improve student achievement. Students not required to attend summer school may apply to attend the demonstration schools this summer. The demonstration schools operate June 7-July 20. Eligible students will be identified as early as the first week in April. Summer School registration opens April 6 and runs through June 22 for the mandatory programs and June 9 for the voluntary demonstration schools. # # # 06-LJG/182/DF |
