M-DCPS TO OFFER SUMMER VOLUNTARY PRE-KINDERGARTEN MIAMI – Four-year-olds in Miami-Dade County who did not take advantage of the state’s new, free voluntary pre-kindergarten program (VPK) during the school year will have the chance to play catch up this summer. Summer VPK will be offered June 2 through July 31 to serve approximately 2,920 students in 146 classes at 57 District schools. The program consists of six hours of high-quality instruction per day for 40 days with a 30-minute rest break each day. Schools to house VPK have been selected based on their location and the availability of multiple classrooms equipped with pre-kindergarten curriculum materials, furnishings and equipment. The VPK curriculum is designed to provide basic foundation skills that address all aspects of a child’s learning. Students will be provided with developmentally-appropriate activities that incorporate the arts, physical development and family literacy. A life skills strand will be offered four Saturdays at three schools in each region. All VPK students will be assessed at the beginning of the next school year. To support this program, VPK teachers will receive professional development prior to the beginning of the program. Family Literacy Nights will help families on four weeknights through activities and the Family Literacy At-Home Packets. Registration began March 1 at six locations established by the county’s Early Learning Coalition. Both M-DCPS and the Early Learning Coalition have VPK hotlines that parents can call for more information – (305) 995- PREK (7735) for the District and (305) 644-4046 for the Coalition or visit vpkhelp.org. # # # 06-LJG/191/DF |
