MIAMI – What began 20 years ago as an international studies magnet program at one of Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ elementary schools has become a world-renowned academic program that is recognized by the governments of France, Germany and Spain as part of their own educational systems. As Sunset Elementary School approaches the 20th anniversary of its International Studies Magnet Program, the school will commemorate this momentous occasion with two special celebrations. The first event, The International Showcase, will be at 10 a.m. March 29, at the Sunset Café at Sunset Elementary School, 5120 S.W. 72 Street. This event will honor all the dignitaries involved in spearheading and supporting the program. Some of the dignitaries invited to the celebration include Senator Bob Graham and Governor Bush, as well as School Board members and Superintendent of Schools Rudolph F. “Rudy” Crew. Activities include a program, tour and lunch. The second event is The International Gala at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at the J.W. Marriott on Brickell Avenue. This event will involve alumni and current staff and parents. “By all of us working together over the past 20 years, the International Studies Program has been triumphant and the school has been internationally, nationally and locally recognized for its numerous achievement and accolades,” said Dr. Aline Sarria, Sunset Elementary’s principal. The International Studies Program conforms to the highest standards of education found both in Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the national education systems of the three European countries that collaborate with the District. Each program is a total bi-national experience that incorporates the strength of an American school system with a European-type curriculum. It offers a rigorous academic curriculum, including two and a half hours of daily foreign language instruction with a native language teacher. The program has an international population of students from more than 50 countries who speak more than 20 languages at home.
