MIAMI SPRINGS MIDDLE SCHOOL VIES FOR MIAMI – Miami Springs Middle School is celebrating the honor of being one of 48 national finalists for the prestigious Intel and Scholastic Schools of Distinction Awards. The school is one of six finalists in the Science Achievement category. Miami Springs Middle’s selection was based on its curriculum, which promotes student achievement through hands-on experiences and thought-provoking projects. Finalists were chosen from private and public schools from across the country that participated in the application and judging process. The Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory Center for Classroom and Teaching oversaw the process. Schools are chosen for creating innovative and replicable programs that support positive results in a student’s education. Finalists compete for $190,000 in grants from the Intel Foundation and additional prizes from other companies. Winning schools must have a comprehensive program of parental and community involvement, teamwork, professional development, technology and consistent student achievement. Two winners, one elementary and one secondary, will be selected in each of the eight categories including academic, literary, mathematics, science, technology, leadership, professional development and collaboration & teamwork. Each winner will receive $10,000. In addition, a “Best of the Best” award worth $15,000 will be given to one elementary school and one secondary school. The winners will be recognized at an awards ceremony on October 5 in Washington, D.C. Intel is a world leader in silicon innovation.
