SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES MORE THAN $89 MILLION
IN NEW SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools students will soon benefit from five new schools and two major construction projects totaling more than $89 million dollars.  The new facilities were approved by the School Board at its April 18th meeting.

The new schools will be based on prototype designs commissioned by the School Board last year.  The prototypes allow the District to build more schools in less time and will result in substantial savings in design fees.

Three new prototype elementary schools will be built by Suffolk Construction Company:

  • State School “A-1,” will be located at S.W. 112th Ave. and S.W. 236th St. and will help relieve Dr. Edward L. Whigham and Pine Villa elementary schools. It will have 826 student stations located in 93,000 sq. ft., including covered walkways.
  • State School “U-1” will be located at N.W. 194th St. and 79th Ave. and will provide 1,239 student stations in 123,000 sq. ft., including covered walkways.  “U-1” will help relieve Joella C. Good, Charles D. Wyche and Palm Springs North elementary schools
  • State School “V-1” will be located at N.W. 92nd Ave. and 119th St.  “V-1” will provide 1,239 student stations in 123,000 sq. ft., including covered walkways, and will help relieve Ernest R Graham and Ben Sheppard elementary schools.

Two new prototype Early Child Centers (ECCs) will be constructed by Jasco Construction Company, Inc.  Each will house 396 student stations in 38,000 square feet.

  • ECC-1 will be located near N.W. 197th St. and 78th Ave. and will provide relief to Joella C. Good and Charles D. Wyche elementary schools.
  • ECC-2 will be located at S.W. 119th Ave. and 2nd St. and will provide relief to Marjory Stoneman Douglas and Wesley Matthews elementary schools.

The School Board also cleared the way for major construction projects at Miami Central Senior High School and Holmes Elementary School by approving funds for site preparation at those facilities. The funds provide for demolition of selected buildings in preparation for new construction.

In the last ten months, the School Board has approved more than $680 million for school construction. That total, combined with furniture, fixtures, equipment and other project costs, will provide more than $1 billion in new facilities for the District’s students.
