MIAMI-DADE PUBLIC SCHOOLS STUDENTS WIN
BIG IN STATE CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

MIAMI – With six schools placing in the top three of ten categories and five individual winners, students from Miami-Dade Public Schools outdid themselves at the recent 2006 Florida Superstate III Scholastic Chess Championship.

More than 1,100 Miami-Dade students participated in the state chess competition held in Miami in March. Individual winners were Michael Masters from Biscayne Elementary, Paul Massanat from W.J. Bryan Elementary, Gabriel Alvarez from Rockway Middle, William Gonzalez from José Martí Middle and Manuel De Freitas from Coral Gables Senior High.

And while many schools placed well in all categories, the following won spots on the top three of their respective categories:

  • Olympia Heights Elementary – 3rd place, K-1 Open; 1st place, K-3 U600*
  • Flagami Elementary – 3rd place, K-3 Open; 3rd place, K-5 U750; 3rd place, K-5 Open
  • Melrose Elementary – 1st place, K-5 Unrated
  • José Martí Middle – 1st place, K-8 Unrated
  • West Miami Middle – 3rd place, K-8 Unrated
  • Rockway Middle – 1st place, K-8 U850; 3rd place, K-8 Open

Students are currently competing in the National Scholastic Chess Championship. Competitions for elementary, middle and senior high are taking place in different locations and on different dates through mid-May.
