PARENTS, COMMUNITY HAVE THE CHANCE TO SHAPE DUAL-LANGUAGE PROGRAM PLANNED TO IMPROVE MORNINGSIDE ELEMENTARY

MIAMI – Parents and resident who live in the attendance zone for Morningside Elementary will have a voice in selecting the menu of languages to be offered at the school as part of academic improvements planned by Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

The District will introduce a schoolwide dual-language international studies program at Morningside beginning in kindergarten and 1st grade next school year.  The remaining grades in the school will be added year by year through 2010.  In addition, Morningside will become the first school in Miami-Dade to offer a voluntary “Saturday academy” in a third language other than English.

Based on a series of community meetings, the District has identified three languages that appear to be of greatest interest to Morningside parents and community members – French, Haitian-Creole, and Spanish.

Parents and community members will be surveyed from May 1 through May 4 on which menu they prefer:

  • French and Haitian-Creole during regular school days, Spanish on Saturdays;
  • Haitian-Creole and Spanish during regular school days, French on Saturdays; or
  • Spanish and French during regular school days, Haitian-Creole on Saturdays.

A parent survey will be sent home with students on Monday, May 1.  Parents can return the survey on May 2, 3 or 4.  While a family with more than one student enrolled at Morningside may receive more than one survey, only one survey per family will be tallied.

A District administrator will be at Morningside in the library media center on the mornings of May 2, 3 and 4 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon to collect surveys from community members who want to express their views.  Community members will be asked for proof of address (driver’s license or state ID card, utility bill, lease or mortgage document showing current address) to demonstrate that they live within the Morningside attendance zone.  As with parents, only one survey per household will be tallied.

Morningside’s faculty also will be surveyed during the week of May 1.

The surveys will be tallied publicly in the school’s library media center on May 4 after dismissal.
