HOMESTEAD HIGH STUDENTS RECEIVE ONE MILLION DOLLARS IN SCHOLARSHIPS Two students named Bill Gates ScholarsMIAMI – Homestead Senior High School’s Class of 2006 is graduating in style after racking up nearly one million dollars in scholarship money through various national and local honors. Homestead High had four Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship finalists this year. Of the four finalists, Kemy Joseph and Laura Nibot were named Bill Gates Scholars. They received full scholarships up to and including their Master’s degree at the university of their choice. The school also received three Silver Knight honors. Kemy Joseph was a winner in new media. Khaleah Evelyn (journalism) and Jessica Railey (speech) received honorable mentions. In addition to winning the Bill Gates scholarship and Silver Knight, Kemy Joseph received the prestigious George W. Jenkins Scholarship, a full scholarship to the University of Miami. He’s also the recipient of various scholarships totaling more than $350,000 this year. Joseph plans to attend the University of Miami. Valedictorian Laura Nibot has been honored by the Hispanic Heritage Youth, Homestead Rotary Club, Judge Sidney M. Arowitz, Mercedes-Benz USA, Wal-Mart Foundation, the Mas Family and Elks Lodge – Miami Lodge No. 948. Laura plans to attend the University of Miami. Other notable scholarship winners include Jessica Railey, a UNIVISION/Papa John’s Academic Achievement Award recipient of more than $10,000. Jessica has also won scholarships from the Homestead Rotary Club, Jamaican Association of Miami-Dade Educators, Miami-Dade Legal Support Association and University of North Florida. Several other students also received full scholarships. Erica Darius won a Florman Foundation scholarship; Felix Ferrer won DeVry University’s Presidential scholarship; and Joshua Pallo won the Florida Association of Post-Secondary Schools and Colleges scholarship. # # # 06-LJG/229/DF |
