TWO MIAMI-DADE PUBLIC SCHOOLS TEACHERS WIN
NATIONAL DISNEY EDUCATION AWARD

MIAMI – Two Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) teachers – one a veteran and the other a rookie – have won the 2006 Disney Teacher Award, which recognizes creativity, innovative teaching methods and ability to inspire students while actively engaging them in learning.

David Buncher received the Disney Teacher Award for high school science. He is the science chair at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School and is in his 24th year of teaching in M-DCPS. Buncher has taught biology, chemistry, physics, and astronomy. Through his students’ grant writing, the school has received grants from Toyota, NASA, Best Buy, Lemelson-MIT, and many local businesses.

Rafael Crespo, the 2005 Rookie Teacher of the Year, has been working with M-DCPS for just over two years as a math teacher at Miami Lakes Middle School. He also has sponsored the chess and math club at the school during his tenure and is a member of the "AIMS" team that works over the summer to develop the school's curriculum map and specialized activities for homerooms that are geared towards addressing grade level deficiencies. He received the award for middle school math.

Chosen from more than 75,000 nominations nationwide, each Disney Teacher Award winner will receive $10,000 and a trip to Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., from July 29th – August 3rd for an awards gala, professional development and fun in the theme park. In addition, each winner’s school will receive $5,000.
