MIAMI-DADE PUBLIC SCHOOLS FALLS JUST SHORT OF AN 'A' MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools earned a second straight grade of B in the state’s school accountability system, falling just seven points short of the cutoff score for a districtwide A. The District earned 403 points in the accountability calculation, which includes student performance on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), learning gains, and learning gains of the lowest scoring students. That was up 15 points from 2005 and just below the 410 score required for an A. The announcement of the higher District grade followed the release of school grades last week. For the first time since the State of Florida began issuing school grades, most schools in Miami-Dade County Public Schools earned an A. Fifty-three percent of Miami-Dade’s schools – 179 out of 328 receiving grades Wednesday – received an A based on their students’ performance on the 2006 FCAT this spring. That improved on the 2005 result of 47 percent of schools graded with an A. Eighty-seven schools had higher grades in 2006 than in 2005, including 59 percent of middle schools (37 schools). The number of schools with higher grades in 2006 more than doubled the number with lower grades. Twenty-two of the 39 schools that have extended school days and a longer school year through the School Improvement Zone raised their letter grades. # # # 06-LJG/245 |
