MIAMI SENIOR HIGH TEACHER TO BE INDUCTED INTO MIAMI - Dr. Joseph W. Underwood will take his place among the best teachers in America during the National Teachers Hall of Fame (NTHF) induction ceremony June 14-16 in Emporia, Kan. Underwood is one of five teachers in the nation to receive this honor. A 21-year veteran of the classroom, Underwood learned of his selection into the NTHF during a surprise ceremony at Miami High on April 19. Among those in attendance were Agustin J. Barrera, Miami-Dade School Board Chair, Karen Aronowitz, UTD President, Joe Sanchez, City of Miami Commissioner, Marjorie Werly, NTHF representative, and Juan Reyneri of Pearson Education-Prentice Hall. Assistant Principal Benny Valdes, one of Underwood’s former students, presented the Hall of Fame plaque to his teacher. “Joe is a serious and dedicated educator, whose love of educating children goes far beyond the classroom doors,” said Agustin J. Barrera. The NTHF was founded in 1989 to honor elementary and secondary teachers and the teaching profession through a recognition program and museum. Nominees must be certified teachers, active or retired, with at least 20 years of teaching experience.
