TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK, MAY 7-11, 2007

MIAMI - The Week of May 7-11, 2007 is nationally recognized as Teacher Appreciation Week. Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) will celebrate its more than 21,000 teachers with the It Takes… Courage poster, which features M-DCPS Teacher of the Year Joan Sharperson, Runner-up Catherine Conkling-Wagner, and the Finalists: Laurence Axtell, Susan Green, Meghan Hauptli, and Richard Ingraham, Jr.

At the April School Board meeting, Vice-Chair Martin Karp introduced a resolution endorsing Teacher Appreciation Week. Dr. Karp, a former elementary school teacher, knows firsthand the positive impact teachers have on their students.

“A teacher is a role model and inspiration to students,” said Dr. Karp. “We must ensure that our greatest assets are being appreciated and that their many great stories are being told.”

“It takes courage to be a teacher,” said M-DCPS Superintendent Rudy Crew. “I truly value their commitment to ensuring that we are giving our students the education they need and deserve to succeed in the real world. I encourage everyone to take a moment to thank teachers for the difference they are making everyday.”

The It Takes…Courage poster will be distributed to M-DCPS teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week.
