M-DCPS Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) Registration 2008-2009 Parents who want to take advantage of the state’s free VPK program in public schools may register their children for the Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Prekindergarten lottery. Children must be 4 years old by September 1, 2008. STEP ONE The first step in the registration process is for parents/guardians to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) at selected Child Development Services (CDS) locations. To obtain a COE, parents/guardians must provide a birth certificate and two proof of Florida residency documents (e.g.) a utility bill, a lease, a bank statement or a pay stub that shows their home address. For current information regarding certificates of eligibility, parents may visit the Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/Monroe website at www.VPKhelp.org or call Child Development Services at 305-373-3521. STEP TWO The second step is for parents/guardians to take the original COE to their school for participation in the lottery. In 2005, Miami-Dade County Public Schools received state approval to hold lotteries to select pre-kindergarten students. Schools with Pre-K classes will conduct a lottery on May 27, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. in their media center. Parents will be notified of the results on May 29, 2008. Original COEs of students not selected in the lottery will be returned to parents beginning on May 29, 2008. To accommodate the many parents/guardians who are applying for COEs, the date of the VPK Lottery held by Miami-Dade County Public Schools has been changed from May 12, 2008 to May 27, 2008. REGISTRATION SITES Parents may register their eligible children and obtain a COE (with the requireddocuments) at the following VPK registration sites.
