M-DCPS Students Make Gains On FCAT Retake

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools students taking the Spring 2008 FCAT Retake for grades 11 and 12 made exceptional improvement in math.

In mathematics, higher percentages of the District’s participating 11th- and 12th-grade students obtained passing scores on the Spring 2008 FCAT Retake, increasing from 24 percent in 2007 to 30 percent in 2008. Notably, passing rates in mathematics for students in grade 11 increased by eight points to 33 percent.

Passing rates remained constant for reading with 15 percent of the District’s participating students obtaining a passing score. Overall, passing rates remained constant or improved from 2007 to 2008 for students who had not previously passed the FCAT graduation tests.

Notably, students at Homestead, Miami Central, Miami Edison, Miami Jackson, Miami Northwestern, and North Miami senior high schools improved their math scores. The percentage of 11th-grade retakes at Homestead and Miami Edison passing the FCAT Retake mathematics assessment increased by 15 points to 36 percent and 39 percent, respectively.

Combined across grades 11 and 12, 2,095 or 15 percent of students taking the reading assessment and 1,940 or 30 percent of students taking the mathematics assessment achieved passing scores.

“The improvements that our students have made are significant. We are encouraged by their steady progress,” said Schools Superintendent Rudy Crew. “These gains reflect what we have known all along.”
