TITLE I DISTRICT CHESS K-12 TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD AT MIAMI EDISON MIDDLE SCHOOL

 

WHO: Grand Master of Chess Maurice Ashley, students, parents, District administrators and interested citizens

WHAT: Title I District CHESS K-12 Tournament
WHEN: Saturday, May 17, from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
WHERE: Miami Edison Middle School, 6101 N.W. 2 Avenue

WHY:            Approximately 700 students from Title I Regional Centers CHESS tournaments are registered for the 2007-2008 Title I District CHESS K-12 Championship. The five-round competition is an annual event that supports the development of critical thinking skills, logic, problem solving and self-esteem. Ashley, the first African-American International Grand Master, will speak with the expected 400-plus parents in attendance. He also will tour the tournament sites and participate in a forum with facilitators. An awards ceremony will follow the competition at 2:15 p.m.

To celebrate the work and dedication of Miami-Dade school teachers.  Teachers who attend the free event will receive a 20 percent discount on all store merchandise.  Raffles, refreshments, and give-a-ways are also part of the two-hour event.  Rafe Esquith, author of “Teach Like Your Hair’s On Fire” will have a book signing and give a brief lecture.
