M-DCPS Students Make Impressive Gains On 2007-08 FCAT

Students in Zone schools made substantial increases in each of the last three years.

Miami – Students in all grades of Miami-Dade County Public Schools made impressive gains this school year on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), as reported today by the Florida Department of Education.  The percentage of students meeting the State’s high measures on the Sunshine State Standards increased at nearly every grade level for every subject area.

“These outstanding results reflect four years of dedication and hard work by our teachers, students, administrators and parents.  This progress is shared by the local municipalities, colleges and universities, community organizations, and faith-based institutions that have taken an active role in helping our students succeed,” said Superintendent Rudy Crew.

In the reading category, the performance of M-DCPS mirrored that of students across the state, with increases in the percentages of students scoring high (Level 3-5) seen in almost every grade tested.

Substantial improvements were made in mathematics by M-DCPS students in grades 8-10, who outpaced students statewide by as much as 8 points.  A greater percentage of Miami-Dade students have scored in Levels 3-5 in every grade tested from 2007 to 2008.

In the science category, a considerable yearly growth was seen in the number of students scoring in Levels 3-5 in all tested grade levels.  Miami-Dade students exceeded all students in the state at all three grade levels tested, grades 5, 8 and 11.

For students attending schools in the School Improvement Zone, the increases were substantial across all grade levels. The percentage of students who scored in Levels 3-5 in mathematics increased by five points, with considerable increases in each of the last three years.  In reading, the overall percentage of Zone school students scoring in Levels 3-5 also increased yearly, and steady increases also were evident for students in middle and senior high school grade levels.
