Baker Aviation Students To Build Aircraft From the Ground Up MIAMI - Students attending Miami-Dade’s George T. Baker Aviation School this summer are participating in an exciting project in which they will construct an aircraft from the ground up. The aircraft then will be flown by Barrington Irving, one of the youngest persons and the first black pilot to fly solo around the world. The project, “Build and Soar,” is a dynamic undertaking developed by Irving to connect education and industry. The students also will engage in other project-based learning opportunities where they build rockets, construct wind tunnel aerodynamic flight-testing, and participate in numerous real and computer simulations. Irving, a graduate of Miami Northwestern Senior High, founded the Experience Aviation, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering minority youth to pursue careers in aviation. The organization provides programs designed to build students’ math, science, and reading skills. Additionally, Baker Aviation’s instructors utilize alternative classroom teaching methods to promote understanding, integration, and retention of concepts, facts and skills. “Build and Soar” is funded by Miami-Dade County Public Schools and a South Florida Workforce Grant: Committed Learners Always Striving for Success (CLASS).
