SUPERINTENDENT ALBERTO M. CARVALHO ANNOUNCES
STUDENT EFFORT TO ASSIST HURRICANE VICTIMS IN HAITI
MIAMI – Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho today announced a student drive to collect items needed to assist the victims of four hurricanes and tropical storms that have devastated Haiti in recent weeks.
“We know how important it is for our students to become global citizens. This is an excellent opportunity for them to see first-hand how the actions they take here can help the citizens of other countries. It is community service on a global level,” Carvalho said.
Students are encouraged to bring the items to their schools for the next two weeks. The school district is working on the effort in cooperation with local relief agencies that regularly assist Haiti.
Among the items needed are non-perishable foods, including canned fish and meat; bags of rice; bags of dried beans; pasta; biscuits; crackers; cooking oil; and baby formula. Also needed are household items including cooking utensils, pots, pans, and short wave radios. Personal hygiene items such as soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, diapers, and feminine hygiene products may also be collected, along with basic first aid items including bandages, rubbing alcohol and aspirin. Clothing and shoes for men, women and children as well as rubber boots will also aid in this cause.
