M-DCPS KICKS OFF 2008 UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN

MIAMI - Some 1,000 Miami-Dade public school students, teachers and administrators kicked off the 2008 United Way campaign with an energetic breakfast rally today at Parrot Jungle Island. Guests included former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Antonio Freeman, Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho and student government representatives.  The innovative Fútbol Kingdom Challenges Group put on soccer demonstrations, and “DJ Kalid” of  99 Jamz and the musical group, Pretty Ricky, encouraged the audience to support the United Way.

Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho encouraged students to participate at today’s 2008 United Way Campaign kickoff.

“When we talk about people who ask for so little and do so much for our community, United Way tops the list,” Carvalho said.

The annual event is part of the District’s effort to teach children of all ages the importance of philanthropy and service to community.

The Miami-Dade County Public School’s United Way campaign is the largest of its kind in the nation.  Each year, students raise nearly $1 million to help build a stronger county. School district employees raise approximately $1.6 million each year.
