M-DCPS, CITY OF MIAMI LAUNCH GREEN SCHOOLS PROJECT

Miami – Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho and City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz launched a new “green” contest today at MAST Academy that will bring green makeover projects to a grand prize-winning school.

Carvalho referenced the District's latest efforts to teach students ways to act ecologically responsible.  Last year, schools reduced paper consumption by 87,000 pounds and reduced fuel consumption by more than 1.2 million pounds.

“Ideally, all schools will be trained,” Carvalho said, encouraging students and teachers to communicate about the importance of good ecological practices.

The contest, developed by EcoMedia, a marketing company that creates environmentally sound programs, is available to all public schools in Miami and San Francisco.  Each school will be asked to submit a short standard form including a creative component expressing what being green means to them, and why their school should receive a green makeover.

Also at today’s launch was EcoMedia Founder and CEO Paul Polizzotto, WFOR-TV/CBS President/General Manager Shaun McDonald, Technical Consumer Products (TCP) CEO Ellis Yan, U.S. Green Building Council CEO Rick Federizzi, and Jack Dunnigan, Assistant Adminstrator of National Oceanic & Atmospheric Agency (NOAA).
