MIAMI-DADE SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES CONTRACT WITH
SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS ALBERTO M. CARVALHO

MIAMI - The Miami-Dade County School Board today approved a contract with Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho.  The two-year contract comes with an annual salary of $275,000 and allows for annual increases based on the cost of living, although Carvalho asked that the increases would not take place if other employees did not receive increases because of troubled economic conditions.
Carvalho thanked School Board members for the contract approval and addressed the many media who were present at the meeting.  “Come back when we discuss graduation rates, come back when we discuss the closure of schools. Come back when we discuss teacher contract issues, come back when one of our children falls thru the cracks -- that too is important. Actually, I believe that is the most important function that you should be reporting on.”

Carvalho began his career with Miami-Dade County Public Schools as a science teacher.  He was soon promoted to Assistant Principal, launching a long and distinguished career in administration.  He has served as the school district's Public Information Officer and as Associate Superintendent of Intergovernmental Affairs, Grants, Marketing and Community Services.

Carvalho has forged strong relationships with local governments, community organizations, and parent groups.  He is responsible for the development of ten compacts with Miami-Dade County municipalities that have helped strengthen the services the school district offers to students and the community.

As head of the District's intergovernmental relations, Carvalho has spent countless days in Tallahassee and Washington, helping to shape legislation that benefits students and their families.
