Miami-Dade CEOs to Become
Chief Education Officers for a Day

M-DCPS and Merrill Lynch Host Principal for a Day

MIAMI – What does it take to lead a public school? On October 21, more than 350 CEOs, judges, mayors, legislators, attorneys, bankers, and military commanding officers will find out when they become Principals for a Day at Miami-Dade County public schools across the county.

Sponsored by Merrill Lynch in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, the event kicks off with a 9:30 a.m. press conference with Miami Mayor Manny Diaz at Booker T. Washington Senior High, and culminates with a 12:30 p.m. luncheon at the BankUnited Center at the University of Miami. Washington High is located at 1200 N.W. 6th Ave, Miami; the BankUnited Center is at 1245 Dauer Drive, Coral Gables.

“The participants will be astounded and enlightened,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho said. “Few jobs demand more than that of a principal, and few professionals give more of themselves than the women and men who head our schools.”  Carvalho stated, “Principals are CEOs, and then some. They’re responsible for budget, strategic planning, public relations, personnel management, crisis management and security. They’re custodians of public dollars and the public trust. Above all they are teachers – instructional leaders charged with preparing students for the demands of the real world,” he added.

Principal for a Day mobilizes hundreds of Miami-Dade County business and community leaders to experience first-hand the triumphs and challenges of running a public school. The program’s goal is to build active partnerships with schools, enhancing student achievement and yielding a stronger, more educated workforce.

“Making a commitment to partner with a principal, sharing our expertise and talents, and leveraging our professional and personal connections are crucial at this time. Merrill Lynch looks forward to translating this one-day experience into long-term relationships to support the local schools,” said Andres de Corral, Managing Director for Merrill Lynch Miami International Complex.
