MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS STUDENT LEADERS TO PARTICIPATE IN POSSE FOUNDATION PROGRAM
MIAMI – A group of Miami-Dade public school students will have a unique opportunity to earn scholarships to a prestigious university through the Posse Foundation, Inc.
The foundation is sending 10 Miami-Dade County Public Schools seniors to the University of Pennsylvania with four-year, full-tuition scholarships next fall, through a partnership between Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the Posse Foundation.
“This is exactly the kind of initiative that is needed to help ensure that students who show promise and intelligence have access to a first-rate college education," said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho.
The Posse Foundation seeks students from diverse backgrounds who show great academic and leadership potential. Once candidates are selected, they are put in groups, or posses of 10.
The program has four components: the Dynamic Assessment Process evaluates outstanding student leaders who can achieve at selective colleges and universities; the Pre-Collegiate Training Program prepares the Posse Scholars for college through workshops and team-building activities; the Campus Program focuses on retaining students through support, and the Career Program helps students transition to leaders in the workforce.
Founded in 1989, the Posse Foundation has three goals, which include expanding the college candidate pool to comprise more multicultural students and assisting colleges to build campus environments that are more welcoming to students of all backgrounds. In addition, the foundation ensures that Posse Scholars achieve academically and graduate to become workforce leaders. More than 2,500 students have received scholarships to top universities through the program.
