MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO LAUNCH SUPERINTENDENT’S
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM

MIAMI – Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho announced the creation of the Superintendent’s Artist in Residence Program during today’s School Board meeting. The program will launch in conjunction with the Miami-Edison Edu-Plex for the 2009-2010 school year.

The Artist in Residence program will bring professional artists, including musicians, writers, composers, as well as visual and performing artists, into the classroom to introduce students to the arts and culture. The program aims to create a forum for students and teachers to share arts learning; allow students a glimpse into possible career paths; foster a life-long passion for the arts, and provide students direct access to professional artists.

The first founding artist in residence will be Daniel Bottero, an Argentinean-born artist. The talented painter’s works are displayed around the world. Bottero will teach monthly classes and students will assist him in designing and painting a mural at Miami Edison Senior High School. In addition to his classes, he will visit other schools to promote the arts.

The school district supports arts in schools and understands that artistic expression is important to a student’s development. Students who study art have improved school attendance, sharpened critical and creative skills as well as increased self-directed learning. A recent study indicates that creativity and innovation, like those found in the arts, will be highly sought skills in the coming years due to the global economy.

For more information on the artist, please contact Carolyn Blitz by phone at 646-409-2330, via email at cblitz@studioBinternational.com, or visit www.BotteroDaniel.com.
