SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES CONTRACT EXTENSION FOR
SUPERINTENDENT ALBERTO M. CARVALHO

MIAMI - The Miami-Dade County School Board today approved a contract extension for Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho through June 30, 2013.

Dozens of Legislators, mayors, business leaders, educators, parents and students gathered at the Board's monthly meeting to speak in favor of extending Carvalho's contract, based on his strong performance for the past year.

Since becoming Superintendent on Sept. 10, 2008, Carvalho has improved student achievement, and there has been a dramatic rise in school performance grades, with a record number of schools earning an A grade. Fifty-eight percent of the District’s schools received A’s for the 2008-2009 school year, and 90 percent of the schools received performance grades of A, B, or C.

Carvalho has also dealt with more than $400 million in cuts to the school district's budget, dramatically reducing the size of the district's central office, while protecting the classroom and the workforce. "I am your asset," Carvalho told the Board.

Carvalho announced that he would donate honoraria for two upcoming speaking engagements, including $25,000 for a keynote address, to the school district.  “Hopefully, it will help save someone’s job.”
