SUPERINTENDENT REWARDS M-DCPS SCHOOLS FOR ENERGY AND WATER CONSUMPTION SAVINGS MIAMI- One of Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho’s recent initiatives is to establish a best practices project to advance the principles of long term sustainability to ultimately reduce the District’s carbon footprint. The superintendent introduced this plan during his Opening of Schools Meeting on August 19, 2009 and it is expected to produce roughly $10 million in cost savings over the next year. To achieve this goal and encourage school site participation, any energy and water consumption reductions achieved by a location during the 2009-2010 fiscal year, will be returned to that location at a rate of 75 percent of the savings, as a rebate. “The idea is to offer individual school sites ownership as to their energy and water consumption, while at the same time protecting our environment,” said Carvalho. “It is a win-win situation for all.” All school sites have received customized reports with information on their respective location’s energy consumption targets for the months of September 2009 through and including June 2010. As future monthly reports are issued, they will include actual consumption for the prior month, which can be compared with the target, as well as the year-to-date rebate earned by the particular location. In the future, similar reports will be used to track water consumption against a set of targets for the balance of the fiscal year. # # # 09-JJS-040/GC |
