MIAMI-DADE SCHOOL BOARD ACCEPTS GRANT AWARDS TOTALING $5.3 MILLION
TO FUND LITERACY, VIOLENCE PREVENTION, COMMUNITY LEARNING PROGRAMS

Miami-Dade County School Board accepted seven grant awards totaling approximately $5,364,145 to fund various new and continuing programs.  The programs are as follows:

  • Three new and competitive grant awards from the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) totaling $930,308 to fund educational, health, social services, cultural and recreational needs of communities through before- & after-school programs, at Holmes Elementary, Avocado Elementary and Toussaint L’Ouverture Elementary schools.

  • A new competitive $300,000 grant award from the FLDOE to fund the Even Start Family Literacy Project PACE (Parents and Children together in Education) at Ethel Koger Beckham Elementary and Zora Neale Hurston Elementary schools.

  • Two Title I School Improvement grants from FLDOE totaling approximately $4,062,187 geared to increase the achievement of students at schools that have scored below proficiency in reading, mathematics, and/or writing on the FCAT.

  • A continuation grant award from the Center for Civic Education for $71,650 to fund the School Violence Prevention Demonstration Program aimed at providing professional development and materials to 40 4th- to 8th-grade teachers to determine how civic engagement can mitigate the impact of risk factors associated with violent behavior among students. The District’s program is considered a national model and has received grant funds for this program for nine consecutive years.
