MIAMI-DADE 4th AND 8th GRADERS OUTPERFORM STUDENTS IN HISPANIC STUDENTS’ SCORES SHINE MIAMI- Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) students outperformed students in major U.S. cities, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, in the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) in mathematics. M-DCPS’ Hispanic students, who make up 62.5 percent of M-DCPS' student population, scored significantly higher than their counterparts across the country. “I am so incredibly proud of Miami-Dade’s students,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. “Despite high levels of poverty, language barriers and disabilities, our children outperformed children in other large urban areas in very significant ways. This is a credit to the work of teachers, administrators, parents, students and school volunteers.” Among 4th graders, the average mathematics scale score for M-DCPS’ students was notably better than that of students in other large cities. In addition, higher percentages of M-DCPS’ 4th graders scored at or above “Basic” than did students in other large cities. Hispanic M-DCPS 4th grade students outperformed other Hispanic students across all measures in comparison to both the national sample of public schools and that of other large cities. M-DCPS’ Hispanic students’ average scale score ranked first among all other TUDA districts. Only one of the 18 TUDA districts had significantly higher percentages of 4th grade students scoring at or above Basic in mathematics than M-DCPS. The NAEP TUDA also tests 8th graders, and higher percentages of M-DCPS 8th grade students scored at or above “Basic” than did students in other large cities. Only three of the 18 TUDA districts had significantly higher percentages of 8th grade students scoring at or above Basic in mathematics than the M-DCPS. Hispanic 8th grade students in M-DCPS significantly outperformed their counterparts nationally across all measures, in comparison to both the national sample of public schools and to that of other large cities.
