TWO M-DCPS SCHOOLS AMONG GLOBAL-WIDE
‘WORLD MATH DAY’ WINNERS

MIAMI – Two Miami-Dade County public schools were among the 50 winners of “World Math Day,” one of the largest educational events in the world. Over two million children, ages 5-18, from 204 countries participated in the 47-hour online event on March 4. Of the approximately 20,000 schools worldwide that participated, Sweetwater Elementary, in southwest Miami came in first in the nation and 17th in the world.  Mae M. Walters Elementary in Hialeah won sixth place nationally and 38th in the world.

World “Maths” Day, as it is known around the world, takes place on the first Wednesday in March. The event is free for both schools and students and only requires an Internet connection. Questions come under four categories: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The level of difficulty is age appropriate. This year, 452,682,682 questions were correctly answered.

The event is run using the Mathletics Game Engine and is hosted by Australian e-Learning company 3P Learning together with Voyager Expanded Learning.
