THREE M-DCPS STUDENTS AWARDED SCUBA CERTIFICATION SCHOLARSHIPS
MIAMI – Three Miami Beach Senior High School U.S. Navy Cadets were recently named recipients of full SCUBA certification scholarships through the U.S. Navy’s 2009 Women Divers Hall of Fame & Women’s SCUBA Association Training Grants.
The recipients are Cadet Petty Officer Third Class Sasha Dyroff, Cadet Petty Officer Third Class Adriana Chait, and Cadet Seaman Andrea Orduz. Scholarship applicants had to write essays and biographies as well as provide reference letters.
The SCUBA certification is part of Miami Beach High’s new Academy of Marine & Environmental Sciences (AMES). More than 100 students enrolled in AMES when it opened last September. Founded with the assistance of The Celebration of the Sea Foundation, AMES offers unique opportunities to learn about the world’s oceans and the environment. The program will be introduced into the school district as a pilot program next year.
