GRAMMY WINNER NESTOR TORRES VISITS MIAMI-DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD MEETING; ADVOCATES FOR ARTS FUNDING


MIAMI – Grammy Award winner Nestor Torres was a surprise guest at the Miami-Dade County School Board meeting yesterday. The talented musician appeared at the meeting to make a passionate plea for arts programs.

“We have a crisis going on here and it’s a matter of national security. The arts are at stake. It’s about the youth,” said Torres.

Torres asked for the continued support and adequate funding for arts education and programs. He lauded the School Board for their efforts and challenged them to find meaningful ways to help.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools annually endorses March as Arts in our School Month. The school district has long been a major supporter of the arts in education. Arts education plays an important role in providing students with a complete, well-rounded education and are proven to increase student achievement. Arts education also supports a child’s academic and social development by helping to develop skills such as critical thinking, literacy, problem-solving, and effective communication.

Arts education programs help students build the skills necessary for success in the workplace, lead to overall improved academic performance, and have a positive influence on the lives of student’s.
