MIAMI-DADE STUDENTS SHOW IMPROVEMENT ON FCAT RE-TAKES MIAMI - The passing rates on the FCAT Reading Retake improved substantially for Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) 11th and 12th grade students who had not previously passed the reading test required for graduation with a standard diploma. The passing rate for 11th graders jumped seven percentage points, and the percentage of 12th graders passing improved by six points. The improvements in passing rates in reading for M-DCPS students surpassed those of students statewide. “I am heartened by the success of these students who have worked so hard this year, supported by their principals, teachers, parents and many volunteers,” said Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, “however, there are still far too many who have not yet passed this test. We will continue to provide every support and educational opportunity available to these students to help them achieve the goal of high school graduation.” Passing rates on the FCAT Mathematics Retake for M-DCPS 11th and 12th graders declined slightly, but the decline of two percent was less than the six percentage point decline for students statewide. Recent District research has shown that M-DCPS students benefit from taking advantage of the multiple opportunities available to take the FCAT graduation test if they do not pass on its initial offering in the spring of 10th grade. A research brief on the topic can be viewed at http://drs.dadeschools.net/ResearchBriefs/RB0805.pdf. The number of 11th and 12th grade students participating in this retake administration declined somewhat from 2008 to 2009 in both the District and the State. This may be due to a number of factors, including the increased use of concordant scores on college entrance exams (SAT and ACT) to fulfill the graduation requirement. ### 09-JJS/442
