M-DCPS EDUCATORS HONORED AS READING COACH, MIAMI – Topping off Teacher Appreciation Week, a group of Miami-Dade County Public Schools educators were recognized today for their efforts to boost students’ reading skills. Just Read, Florida! and the Florida Literacy and Reading Excellence Center recognized Anita Marti of Hialeah Senior High School as Reading Coach of the Year, while a group of educators from Barbara Hawkins Elementary School was named Reading Leadership Team of the Year. The Hawkins team includes Principal Evelyn Harris, Assistant Principal Jorge Mazon, reading coaches Mildred Moore and Gwendolyn Richards, mentor reading teachers Carolyn Trent Eaddy, Andrea Thompson, and Tiffany Davis, content area teacher Patricia Innocent, professional development liaison Dorothy Hammer, and school counselor Patricia Mergner. Marti has been instrumental in establishing a culture of collaboration among teachers at Hialeah High. The reading leadership team at Barbara Hawkins Elementary has distinguished itself as a model for interpreting student assessment data, planning literacy activities, coordinating intervention services, and providing direction on instructional procedures.
