LIBERTY CITY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL’S FCAT SCORES SOAR MIAMI – FCAT scores for third grade students at Liberty City Elementary School went through the roof this year, soaring more than 40 points in both reading and math. The mercurial rise included reading scores that jumped from 29 to 72 and math scores that rocketed from 39 to 83. This means that three out of four third graders are reading at grade level, as opposed to one in three last year. Liberty City Elementary was on the District’s critical list of Differentiated Accountability schools that were threatened with serious sanctions, including closure, by the Florida Department of Education, if the schools did not improve their scores. To help the school, Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho initiated the Success Academy model, which offered students special tutoring on Saturdays and holidays to help them improve their scores. Students received financial incentives for their attendance. # # # 09-JJS/456 |
