*******MEDIA ADVISORY******* HEALTH DEPARTMENT INFORMS MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF STUDENT DEATH FROM H1N1 VIRUS MIAMI - Earlier today, the Miami-Dade Health Department informed Miami-Dade County Public Schools that a child who attended a district school passed away on June 9, 2009. The health department verified a positive test for the H1N1 virus in the child following the child’s death. After conversations with the Miami-Dade Health Department and verification of the student’s attendance record, it was determined that the child was not contagious when he attended the school. Miami-Dade County Public Schools continues to take general precautions against the flu. The school district is promoting frequent hand-washing among students and staff to maintain a high degree of personal hygiene. Staff is also making sure that all schools have the basic supplies necessary to help students and staff keep their hands clean. Parents can assist in this effort. If anyone exhibits flu-like symptoms, including headache, tiredness, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, or diarrhea and vomiting, it’s very important that they stay at home, to prevent spreading the disease to others.
