MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO ASSIST HAITIAN COMMUNITY IN CONTACTING RELATIVES IN HAITI

MIAMI - Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is stepping up its efforts to aid the Haitian community by offering Internet access at select schools this weekend to facilitate communication between local residents and their families and friends in Haiti.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our schools to help our community,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho.  “People need technology to communicate with their family and loved ones, and we have the resources to make that happen.”

In addition, all District schools will accept items for Haiti, including non-perishable food, bottled water, camping supplies (tents, sleeping bags, lanterns, blankets, mosquito repellent), first aid supplies, and medical supplies (over-the-counter medicines, wheel chairs, crutches, etc.).

People who would like to contribute to Haiti relief efforts can do so online at www.dadeschools.net. Those wishing to pay by check should make checks out to “The Foundation for New Education Initiatives, Inc.”, and indicate “Haiti Earthquake Relief” in the memo section of the check.  Checks should be mailed to 1450 NE 2nd Avenue, Room #776, Miami Florida 33132.

A hotline has been established at 305-995-3000 to assist persons with questions, in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole.
