M-DCPS, CONSULATE GENERAL OF ITALY RENEW MIAMI - Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho and Consul General Marco Rocca of the Consulate General of Italy in Miami met today to renew a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the District and the Consulate, to continue the Italian Extended Foreign Language (EFL) program and to affirm the establishment of the Italian section of the International Studies (IS) program. This is the third time the MOU has been renewed since it was first signed in 1998. This renewal provides Miami-Dade County Public Schools students with the opportunity to become literate in both English and Italian, but also to pursue an academic curriculum with an international focus that addresses rigorous standards of both US and European Union educational systems. According to a recent New York Times article, there has been an overall decrease in foreign language instruction in American schools, except for Chinese and Italian. Miami-Dade County Public Schools is not following that trend and continues to promote the study of world languages as a necessary skill for full participation in a global community. The Consulate General of Italy in Miami office funds four teachers of Italian language arts and humanities. Four M-DCPS schools offer an Italian dual language program: George Washington Carver Elementary (IS), George.Washington Carver Middle (IS), Charles D. Wyche Elementary (EFL), and Lawton Chiles Middle (EFL). For further information, contact Dr. Joanne Urrutia, Bilingual Program, at 305-756-2902. EDITOR’S NOTE: PHOTO ATTACHED.
