M-DCPS MATH TEACHER, ART STUDENTS HONORED BY GOV. CHARLIE CRIST
AT BLACK HISTORY MONTH COMMEMORATION

MIAMI – Delmar Wilson, a 9th-grade Algebra I teacher from Miami Springs Senior High School was named one of three outstanding African American educators chosen statewide for Gov. Charlie Crist’s Black History Month Excellence in Education Award Contest.  The teachers, who were nominated by their peers and students, were chosen for their contributions to education in Florida.

Sharing the stage with Wilson were Tammy Demps, an 8th-grade Algebra I teacher from Carver Middle School in Leesburg, and Makita Blye, a first-grade teacher at Greenway Elementary School in Ocala.  Each winner received an award check for $1,500 plus a $300 gift card from the Office Depot Foundation.

The governor also recognized the winners of several student contests.  The two art winners are from Miami-Dade County:  Omar Chab, a 1st-grade student at Norma Butler Bossard Elementary School, and Lianne Ramirez, a 3rd-grade student at Arch Creek Elementary School.  The web cast elementary school winners: Amanda Ortiz, Gabriela Iglesias and Karla Cedras of Norma Butler Bossard Elementary.  The art contest winners received a $250 gift card, and the web cast-contest winners received software donated by TECH 4 Learning.
