M-DCPS AWARDED $3.5 MILLION RECOVERY ACT GRANT TO EXPAND BROADBAND INTERNET ACCESS, SPUR ECONOMIC GROWTH

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools was awarded a $3.5 million sustainable broadband adoption grant, this week, by the Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration's Broadband Technology Opportunities Program.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds the grants, which totaled more than $160 million, and were awarded to 17 U.S. states and Puerto Rico to support the deployment of broadband infrastructure, enhance and expand public computer centers, bring high-speed Internet access to millions of households and businesses, and link up thousands of schools, hospitals, libraries, and public safety offices to the information superhighway.

The District’s grant opportunity brings forth the following:

  • 6,000 computers for students in 35 targeted schools throughout the County that demonstrate socioeconomic need and meet attendance criteria
  • 10,000 one-year Internet subscriptions for families in these 35 targeted schools
  • Training for parents

This grant will allow for students, who attend schools demonstrating academic need, to access to the Links to Learning Resources, a program created by Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. Students, who would typically not be able to access technology resources/opportunity at home, will now be able to complete homework and receive additional academic interventions via the Student Portal and Links to Learning Resources through the District’s Website:  dadeschools.net.

Parents also will be able to learn more about the Parent Portal located on the District’s Website, will have computers at home to communicate with teachers, and will have access to the resources on the portal including the electronic Gradebook.
