M-DCPS PROVIDES 10 BUSES TO HAITI FOR USE AS CLASSROOMS

MIAMI – After visiting with Haiti’s first lady Elisabeth Preval to assess the educational needs of the country in the aftermath of January’s devastating earthquake, Miami-Dade County Public Schools has made 10 school buses available to Haiti, for use as classrooms. These are buses that had been taken out of service and were scheduled for auction.

Students from three schools – Miami Senior High, Southwest Miami Senior High and Robert Morgan Educational Center – prepared the buses by removing the seats. District staff then stocked the vehicles with student desks and other necessary equipment.  The high school students went a step further by detailing and waxing the buses so that they looked like new before their send-off to Haiti. Each bus was transformed into a re-locatable classroom, complete with a teacher area and ready for Haitian students to continue their education.

The buses will be driven onto a cargo ship at Miami and shipped to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, for placement where needed.  One of the 10 buses will be available for viewing today outside the School Board auditorium.
