SUPERINTENDENT CARVALHO, BOARD MEMBERS ‘RALLY IN TALLY'
TALLAHASSEE, FL – Miami-Dade Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho and seven Miami-Dade School Board members were in Tallahassee today for the Florida PTA's “Rally in Tally,” to advocate for full education funding from the state.
"I am here today not as a superintendent, but as a parent, a PTA National Board Member and as a taxpayer of this state who believes we cannot afford any more cuts to public education. The cost for failing to invest in our children and in our future is simply too high," Carvalho said.
Since Carvalho became superintendent in 2008, the school district has been forced to cut $450 million from its budget. Florida currently ranks near the bottom in the nation in school funding.
"As Florida struggles to recover from this economic disaster,” said Carvalho, “our leaders must recognize that the single most important driver of economic development in Florida will be the presence of a high quality public education system, from pre-K to universities, and therefore must refrain from balancing the State's budget on the backs of our schools,"
Carvalho and Board Members met with the Miami-Dade delegation yesterday to voice concerns about funding, and also held community chats with students, who had traveled to the rally, to answer their questions.
The Board Members who attended the rally included Vice Chair Perla Tabares Hantman, Agustin Barrera, Renier Diaz de la Portilla, Dr. Lawrence Feldman, Dr. Martin Karp, Ana Rivas Logan and Dr. Marta Pérez.
