A MAJORITY OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS TEACHERS
REPORT TO WORK

MIAMI - A majority of Miami-Dade County Public Schools teachers reported to work today (April 12, 2010), contrary to rumors that circulated over the weekend. Approximately 75 percent of teachers reported for duty.

“While we understand the teachers’ frustration and have empathized with their position, depriving students of instructional time is not the appropriate approach to handling this challenge.  We encourage teachers to use constructive methods to communicate their positions outside of school hours,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho.

The school district did experience a larger-than-anticipated number of absences on the part of teachers, but individual school principals have been able to operate on a close-to-normal basis using substitutes and District and Region staff.
