SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES RESOLUTION
IN SUPPORT OF TEACHERS

MIAMI – The Miami-Dade County School Board approved 7-0, a resolution proposed by Dr. Marta Perez in support of the teaching profession, and in opposition to Florida Senate Bill 6.  The bill, which is on the desk of Gov. Charlie Crist awaiting signature, would tie a portion of teachers’ salaries to student performance, as well as impose a five percent reduction of school district funding.

“SB 6 is fraught with unknown costs, all of which fall squarely on the shoulders of local school boards,” said Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. “I commit that I will work to protect the integrity and stability of the teaching profession, and to honor the credentials that teachers have earned.”

The approved resolution supports teacher quality and accountability, and also takes into consideration the fiscal and operational impact of SB 6, as written, on the students, teachers, and administration of local school districts as an intrusion into the day-to-day operation.  SB 6 also would require the development of 2,307 End-of-Course Assessments, which is an extremely expensive undertaking for school districts without additional funding.
