MIAMI-DADE PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO CELEBRATE EARTH DAY, APRIL 22 Through a collaboration between M-DCPS and Miami artist Xavier Cortada, students at over 300 Miami-Dade public schools will celebrate Earth Day on April 22 by participating in Cortada’s Reclamation Project/Native Flags eco-art initiative to help re-grow South Florida’s native tree canopy. The District provided each school with a native tree sapling to be planted on the school grounds and a land reclamation flag designed by Cortada. Upon planting the tree and posting the flag alongside it, students will be able to proclaim that they are "reclaiming that land for nature.” This activity teaches students the importance of environmental sustainability and highlights the fact that the more trees they plant and nurture to maturity, the cleaner the air will be, and the smaller our collective carbon footprint will be. WLRN has produced an informational video describing the importance of engaging students and the community in planting and nurturing these small tree saplings over time to help increase our native tree canopy. The video can be viewed and enjoyed during Earth Week on the District’s website: www.dadeschools.net. This collaboration was also supported by the local chapters of the American Planning Association, American Institute of Architects and U.S. Green Building Council, as well as the Miami Science Museum, the Miami-Dade County Department of Environmental Resources Management, and Veber's Jungle Garden, Inc. EDITOR’S NOTE: • Artist Xavier Cortada will be at Hialeah Senior High School at 11 a.m. to plant a small tree on school grounds with students and post his reclamation flag.
